Tabloidization of News Media

In this part of the blog, i want to mention about restriction of channels’ broadcast and its effects on media. In Turkey, RTÜK busies with this limitation. As the reading of take home essay states, it controls content to a far greater extent than media structure, concentration, increasing market mechanisms. In addition to this, it determines programmes’ quality and which programmes are against the state. It seems reasonable and also useful for infrastructure of states and also viewers because with the help of RTÜK, people can inform about news or other programmes’ contents accurately. However, i think, in Turkey, RTÜK does not play an effective role on media because i think the aim of it should not be protecting state’s structure. As I argued before, it should also interest in quality of programmes. We can not see this characteristic of RTÜK, in Turkey. I look at them, a great deal of programmes seem meaningless and functionless. They do not contribute to development of states, people’s education and general knowledge. For this reason, i think RTÜK can take an insignificant place in broadcast. It may help protection of states, but when it does this duty, it does not help any personal development. On account of this reason, it does not help enhancement of states.

SPEECH TO RADIO-TELEVISION NEWS DIRECTOR ASSOCIATION

“..we are going to mention about the new terrorism news. In Turkey, fifteen soldier dead… Ok, now, we have a mini break. After this break, we will continue to inform you what happened in our country and also world..” Then, the advertisements start. Many of us could have met to these types of programmes or videos. Especially in our country, we can easily see this situation and its effects. When i think about this subject, firstly i ask myself “why this happen occurs?” because news, which is the part of broadcast of television or radio, makes up huge part of our life. We know lots of event which are political, social or may be economical, point of view, interesting or funny scenes by watching news. These types of programs are the part of daily life because news consists of daily life and they reflect our life, conflicts and issues. However, when we watch news, we can not focus on them easily. A great deal of different factors affect this situation such as the quality of news, advertisement etc. The directors let advertising to show themselves in television or radio. In this case, many people can not think that continue to watch television because advertisement may be related to the us, may be say something relating to our life such as buy them because etc. etc. … etc. , but these lead to an decrease in concentration. I believe that, many directors lose many watchers owing to the aim of making profit or an increase channels or programmes’ stable profit by using advertisements.

Plug in Drug

When i read Plug in Drug, firstly i recall my best friend’s brother who called Doruk. He is eight years old now and he is hyperactive boy. When he was three or four, his mother usually let him to watch cartoons and some videos which are related to the songs. He had really interested in these programmes and watched them approximately four or five hours in a day. After a while, his family recognized that, he has started to spent time on his own. Thus, he did not communicate with their family and did not play with his toys. He generally insisted to watch his favourite television programmes regularly instead of explain his feeling and ideas. When his family worried about his state of mind, they went to a hospital. Doctor suspected to his behaviour and said that; Doruk can be autistic. As a result of some determination, the problem is revealed. He was not autistic but he had a serious communication problem owing to an addiction to television. This case also led to some unreasonable and ridiculous attitudes which are indicated themselves in Doruk’s life frequently. His family has taken crucial precaution in order to restrict his free time which is belongs to watch television. As a result of it, now, he is mentally and physically fine. However, if his family would not give enough important to alteration which shows themselves in Doruk’s behaviour, he will probably have serious mental problem. As we can see in this example, despite to the fact that television seems like funny machine which enjoys us, it plays a major role in shaping of our psychology and life style. Moreover, it influences our mental health, and communication skills, especially in play age and childhood period. I think that, the problems are not only related to the family bonds. Of course the relationships and commitments are significant factors in family life. However, under the difficult conditions, if the members of family are healthy, they can talk and solve their problems or share their opinions. I accept that, television damages their bonds and it reduces communication between family members. Hence it is harmful. On the other hand, i believe that, if they want, they can again eat lunch together, go to theatre etc. with no dependency to television. Because they are still conscious and they can aware of what happened inside and outside of the family. Conversely, as in other side of Doruk’s example, if the addiction becomes incurable and the member of family deprived of his mental health, they have no opportunity to regulate what happened before and their relationships.
